The weather at Shap… and The Lonely Planet includes Smoky Jo’s!

February 4th, 2011

Tomorrow we are off to Windermere to smoke at the Wild Boar… we will probably be blown there! We have an exclusive course next week and we are hoping against hope the weather sorts itself out…

I have just found that we get a mention on the Lonely Planet website! We are one of a list of nine course in Europe – we are proud to sit alonside such activities as chocolate making in Brussels, waltzing in Vienna and creating perfumes in Languedoc.

Apparently it originally appeared in the Lonely Planet monthly magazine… if anyone has a copy I’d love to see it!

This is what they say:

Smoke food in Cumbria
Chipotle chillies, Applewood cheddar, kielbasa sausages, kippers – smoking food may no longer be essential for food storage since the advent of modern preservation techniques, but it’s still going strong now we’ve got the taste for it. Smoky Jo’s,  in the Cumbrian village of Shap, offers one- or two-day courses to teach you how to smoke your own food at home, using hot and cold smoke methods. You can also learn to construct your own smoker – apparently a filing cabinet makes an excellent one.
